Tends to favor
  • Safe havens — Treasuries, the dollar, gold
  • Energy and commodities
  • Defense and aerospace
  • Defensive quality + cash optionality

Year in the rearview

⚠ Hindsight — built knowing the answer

For each year, a hypothetical allocation that would have beaten the market — and one wildcard that quietly stole the show. Illustrative only.

The blind challenge

One fixed rule. It allocates each year using only what was knowable on January 1 — no peeking at the result. Then we score it against the S&P 500.

The rule starts from a neutral mix and nudges it based on pre-year conditions: inflation, rates, valuations, last year's move, conflict, recession risk. Same nudges, every year. No tuning to outcomes.

Make it real

The prototype ships with sample data. Three ways to wire in live sources.

1. DIY backend proxy most control

A small server holds your keys and calls SEC EDGAR, FRED/BLS, and a licensed people-data API. You own auth, rate limits, and compliance. Cheapest data, most work.

2. Serverless functions balanced

Cloudflare Workers, Vercel, or Lambda. Keys stay server-side, scales to zero. Point the Live-data source at the function URL.

3. Managed data vendors fastest

Turnkey market-data and sales-intelligence providers handle consent and freshness. A thin proxy forwards calls. Subscription cost, some lock-in.
