Meta AI glasses · iPhone · Google

Every glasses capture, also in Google Photos

Your captures already copy themselves from the glasses into iPhone Photos. Google Photos can copy them from there. You set this up once, then a nightly nudge and a one-minute weekly check catch anything iOS holds back.

How the apple gets to Google

  1. 1
    Glasses

    You take the photo

It stays on the glasses until it is imported.

  2. 2
    Meta AI app · automatic

Auto-import copies it to the phone

Runs when the glasses are on and in the case (or folded), phone Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, and the glasses have more than 30% battery. Afterwards the file is removed from the glasses.

  3. 3
    iPhone Photos

It lands in your camera roll

The Meta AI app saves imports into the iPhone Photos library, which is what its Media tab shows. Users report a "Meta AI" album collecting them.

  4. 4
Google Photos · automatic when iOS lets it run

    Google Photos backs it up

Uploads the new item to your Google account (the same storage Drive uses). This hop needs care, because iOS decides when Google Photos is allowed to work.

Can this be 100% guaranteed?

No one can promise that, and neither Meta nor Google claims it. Hops 2 and 4 depend on conditions you don't always control: the glasses sitting in the case near the phone, and iOS letting Google Photos run. Google's own help says to "keep the Photos app open and your phone plugged in for best results."

You can get close: every capture reaches Google within about a day, plus a weekly check that catches any miss. Step 9 below (open Google Photos when the phone goes on the charger) closes most of the gap.

Setup, in this order

Tick each step as you go. The ticks are saved on this phone only. Menu names are from Meta's and Google's help pages as of October 2026, and app updates can move them.

The apple test

Do this once after setup. It takes about ten minutes.

  1. Take the photo.Wear the glasses and press the capture button at an apple (or anything you can recognize).
  2. Let it import.Fold the glasses or put them in the case, with the phone nearby and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on. Open the Meta AI app. If an Import button shows, a capture is still waiting; give it a minute or tap it.
  3. Find it in iPhone Photos.Open Photos → Recents. The apple should be the newest item.
  4. Watch Google Photos pick it up.Open Google Photos and pull down at the top. Wait for Backup complete.
  5. Confirm the item itself.Open the apple in Google Photos → ⋯ → scroll to Details. It should say Backed up.
  6. Confirm from another device. On a computer, open photos.google.com in the same account. Google says anything you see there is backed up. Find the apple.
  7. Repeat with a 10-second video.Videos are larger and take longer, so they are the better test of the overnight path.
Pass: the apple appears on photos.google.com without you touching anything after step 2, apart from opening Google Photos.

When it doesn't arrive

Meta AI app shows an Import button
CauseAuto-import hasn't run: glasses off or unfolded, out of the case, phone Bluetooth or Wi-Fi off, or glasses battery at 30% or less.
FixCharge the glasses in the case next to the phone, open the Meta AI app, and tap Import.
Import starts but stalls
CauseThe transfer needs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth between phone and glasses. A weak signal, or the phone moving away, breaks it.
FixKeep the phone next to the case with the Meta AI app open. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, then retry. Restart the glasses if it still hangs.
In the Meta AI app, missing from iPhone Photos
CauseMeta AI's Photos permission isn't Full Access.
FixStep 2.
In iPhone Photos, Google Photos doesn't show it at all
CauseGoogle Photos has Limited Photos access, so iOS hides new items from it.
FixStep 6.
Google Photos shows it with a queue or paused icon for hours
CauseiOS stopped Google Photos in the background, or it is waiting for Wi-Fi.
FixOpen Google Photos on the charger and leave it open (Standby or Keep device awake). Turn off Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode, or allow mobile data backup.
"Not enough storage to back up"
CauseThe Google account's storage is full. Photos, Drive and Gmail share it.
FixFree space or add Google One storage, or switch Backup quality to Storage saver.
It backed up, but to the wrong account
CauseBackup account differs from the account you're browsing.
FixGoogle Photos → profile → Photos settings → Backup → Backup account.
Older items upload very slowly
CauseiCloud Photos with Optimize iPhone Storage keeps some originals only in iCloud; Google Photos has to download each one first. New captures are normally still on the phone, so this mostly affects the backlog.
FixLet it run on Wi-Fi and power, or choose Download and Keep Originals if the phone has room.
You deleted a capture in the Meta AI app
EffectMeta says this also deletes it from iPhone Photos. A copy that already backed up stays in Google Photos; delete it there too if you want it gone.

What about Google Drive?

Use Google Photos. The Google Drive iPhone app does not watch your camera roll, and Google points automatic photo backup to Google Photos. Photos and Drive share the same Google storage, so nothing is lost by choosing Photos.

If you specifically need files in a Drive folder, the only hands-off route on iPhone is a nightly Shortcut that finds recent photos in the Meta AI album and saves them to a Drive folder through the Files app. It can't tell what it already copied, and iOS can block it while the phone is locked, so treat it as a fallback, not the main path.

True, false, and unknown

True

Auto-import is on by default for iPhone and copies captures into the phone's photo app when the glasses are in the case or folded, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, and battery is above 30%. (Meta help)

True

After import the media is removed from the glasses and lives in iPhone Photos. Deleting it in the Meta AI app deletes it from iPhone Photos too. (Meta help)

True

Google recommends keeping Google Photos open and the phone plugged in for backup, and offers Standby mode and Keep device awake for big queues. (Google help)

True

The Meta AI app's "Cloud media" setting is Meta's own server storage. It is not a way to export to Google. (Engadget)

Not reliable

Meta's support bot says turning off auto-import or changing permissions under "Settings → [Your Name]" controls the Photos import. A user flagged it as an AI-generated reply, and the menu path doesn't exist. (Meta forum, Oct 2025)

Unconfirmed

"Since iOS 26.1, Google Photos backs up fully in the background." Apple added an API for this in iOS 26.1, but we found no Google statement that Google Photos uses it, and a developer report says the API doesn't run when iCloud Photos is on. Don't rely on it.

Unconfirmed

Meta AI only needs Limited Photos access. One user (May 2026) says imports still worked that way. Google Photos certainly needs Full Access.

Can't be guaranteed

When iOS lets a background upload run, and whether a future Meta AI app or glasses update changes the import menus or rules.
